What does the thread pattern on a screw tell you?

Can you tell what purpose a screw is made for (drywall, stucco, wood, metal, etc.) by its thread pattern (how wide or narrow the thread is) or by the way the point of the screw is shaped (flat, chisel, pointed, etc.)?
