How do I know if a used boat I just aquired still runs?

I just acquired a used boat. It's quite old, I am a curious how I go about finding out whether it leaks and if the motor still runs. The boat has been in the family for a while and no one has used it for probably ten years. The motor is covered (in the hull sort of) so it doesn't have much weathering. Should I take it to a repair shop or put it in the water myself?? I am not very knowledgeable on the matter so what are some questions I should ask and things I should do? Thanks!
